How to enable Developer Mode on Android Auto

March 15, 2026 2 min read

"Developer Mode" is a hidden menu in Android Auto originally designed for programmers to test their applications. However, it's a fundamental tool for any user who wants to install third-party applications or APK files that don't come directly from Google Play.

If you've tried to install a media player and when connecting the phone to the car the application doesn't appear on the screen, this is the missing step.

Step by step to unlock Developer Settings

The process is done on your mobile phone (not on the car screen) and takes less than 1 minute:

  1. Open the Settings app on your mobile phone.
  2. Use the top search bar and type "Android Auto", then select the option that appears with the car icon.
  3. Once inside the Android Auto settings, scroll down to the end of the page.
  4. Look for the section that says "Version" or "Version and permission info".
  5. The Trick: Rapidly tap (with your finger in a row) about 10 times on the word "Version".
  6. A pop-up message will appear asking: "Allow development settings?". Tap on Accept.

How to enable "Unknown Sources"

Once the previous steps are completed, you are now a "Developer". Now we must give the car permission to read external apps:

  1. On the same Android Auto screen where you are, look at the top right corner: you'll see an icon with three vertical dots.
  2. Tap it and select the new menu that has appeared: Developer settings.
  3. Scroll down a bit to find the checkbox called "Unknown sources". Check it.
  4. In the top option called "Application Mode", make sure "Developer" is selected.

All set!

Your car will now accept external applications. It's the perfect time to install the best M3U and video player for your screen.
